Dr Stephanie Rains, NUI Maynooth, gave the fourth in the 2009/10 Sunderland Leverhulme Public Lecture Series on Wednesday 29th April 2009. Her topic was 'The Development of Modern Consumer Culture in Dublin: Department Stores and the Irish industrial Exhibition of 1853'. See video. |
Third Leverhulme Public Lecture | |
Professor Willy Maley, University of Glasgow, gave the third in the 2009/10 Sunderland Leverhulme Public Lecture Series on Wednesday 17th March. His topic was 'Look Back in Hunger: Ireland in Famine's Wake from Munster to The Maze, or The Faerie Queene to Steve McQueen'. The lecture, very well attended, was included in Sunderland's 2009 St Patrick's Day activities organised by NEICN. In addition, Prof Maley also gave a public poetry reading of his own work in Sunderland City Library. The City Library and Art Gallery also hosted an exhibition of Irish historical advertising in March 2009. See video.

First Annual Leverhulme Plenary Lecture | |
Dr Joseph McBrinn, University of Ulster, gave the first in the 2009/10 Sunderland Leverhulme Public Lecture Series on November 15th 2008. This was part of the 6th Irish Studies Conference at the University of Sunderland and is the first of the annual Leverhulme-sponsored plenaries at the conferences. |
